구동사

구동사란 동사+부사, 동사+전치사 또는 동사+부사+전치사의 구조를 통해 원래 동사 혼자 있을 때의 의미와 전혀 다른 새로운 의미를 만들어내는 조합을 의미합니다.

구동사는 문장 내에서 하나의 의미를 가진 독립적인 단어로 취급됩니다. 그리고 하나의 구동사가 한 개 이상의 의미를 가지는 경우도 많습니다.

구동사의 구성

구동사는 동사(get)와 부사(along) 그리고 전치사(with)가 합쳐진 형태로 특정한 행동을 지칭하며, 문장 내에서 별도의 의미를 가진 하나의 단위라고 볼 수 있습니다.

구동사는 세 가지 형태로 구성할 수 있습니다 : 동사+전치사, 동사+부사, 동사+부사+전치사

동사+전치사

많은 구동사가 동사에 전치사가 결합한 형태를 지니고 있습니다. 전치사는 일반적으로 쓰이는 의미 대신 다른 의미로 사용되기도 합니다.

예시: Use up: 소진하다, 다 써버리다
The guest used up all the water.

예시: Make up: 화해하다
She made up with her parents.

동사+부사

동사에 부사를 결합한 형태의 구동사도 있습니다.

예시: Take after: 닮다
She takes after her mother.

예시: Turn off: 끄다, 멈추다
She turned off the lights.

동사+부사+전치사

동사 다음에 부사와 전치사 모두가 나오는 형태를 지닌 구동사도 많이 존재합니다. 이런 형태로 구성된 구동사에서 부사와 전치사는 문장 내에서 동사와 분리될 수 없습니다.

Don't think about getting away with this.

예시: Sneak up on: 몰래 다가가다
The cat snuck up on the mouse before pouncing.

구동사의 사용

구동사는 주로 구어체 또는 일상적인 문어체에서 많이 사용됩니다. 다소 비격식적인 맥락에서 많이 사용하는 표현으로 학술적인 맥락에서는 어울리지 않는 경우가 많습니다.

학술적 텍스트에서 구동사 대신 단일동사 사용하기

경우에 따라 학술적 텍스트에서도 구동사를 사용해야 하는 경우가 있습니다. 구동사 사용이 불가피할 경우에는 해당 구동사가 비격식적인 표현인지 확인한 후에 사용해야 합니다. 학술적인 텍스트에서는 구동사보다는 학술적인 맥락에 더 잘 어울리는 단일동사를 사용해서 동일한 의미를 표현하는 것을 추천합니다.

구동사: This paper looks at the effect of Drug Y on patients.

단일동사: This paper examines the effect of Drug Y on patients.

구동사: The research found out that Drug Y had no effect on the patients.

단일동사: The research discovered that Drug Y has no effect on the patients.

다음과 같은 구동사는 학술적 텍스트에서도 사용해도 적절합니다 : carry out, consist of, and subject to.

구동사의 분리 여부

구동사는 동사와 전치사 또는 부사가 분리 가능한 구동사와 분리가 불가능한 구동사 두 종류로 나눌 수 있습니다.

분리가능형 구동사

분리가능형 구동사는 동사와 전치사 또는 부사가 분리 가능한 구조를 가지고 있습니다. 전치사 또는 부사는 동사 바로 다음 또는 문장 내 목적어 바로 다음에 나올 수 있습니다.

분리되지 않은 구동사: The student gave back the book.

분리된 구동사: The student gave the book back to her.

분리되지 않은 구동사: Don’t forget to hand in your assignment.

분리된 구동사: Don’t forget to hand your assignment in.

다만 목적어가 대명사인 경우에는 전치사 또는 부사는 대명사 바로 다음에 나와야 합니다.

올바른 문장: The boy might set off the alarm.
He might set it off.

틀린 문장: The boy might set off it.

분리불가형 구동사

분리불가형 구동사는 동사와 전치사 또는 부사가 분리 될 수 없는 구조를 가지고 있습니다. 전치사 또는 부사는 반드시 동사 바로 다음에 나와야 합니다.

올바른 문장: The thieves broke into the house last night.

틀린 문장: The thieves broke the house into last night.

올바른 문장: Please go over the materials before the lecture.

틀린 문장: Please go the materials over before the lecture.
